How do I become a member?

Is it a long or complicated process?

To become a member complete and submit the quick online application form. Details provided are in confidence and will only be used for Trust purposes. Alternatively, you can call the Membership hotline on 0121 424 1218

What information is required in order to become a member?

We require contact information as well as answers to a few questions and the level involvement you wish to have.

Do I have to pay to become a member?

There is no fee required in order to become a member.

Do I have to live in a certain area to become a member?

You are eligible to become a member of the Trust if you live in Birmingham, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, Tamworth or South Staffordshire catchment areas or all other areas which now form the Rest of England and Wales Constituency.

Is there an age requirement to become a member?

You must be aged 16 years or above.

What are the benefits of being a member?

  • You can have a say in how your hospitals are run and on the services and facilities we provide.
  • You will be able to vote for an individual to become a governor. You can apply to become a governor yourself
  • You can help improve patient experience by attending patient panels and other groups.
  • You can have as little or as much involvement as you like.
  • You can attend free health talks on a wide and varied range of topics.
  • You can enjoy a wide range of exclusive discounts from national and local companies including entertainment centres, restaurants and retailers.

How involved can I be?

We want members to enjoy their involvement with the Trust and we understand that people will want to receive different amounts of information. Members can choose how much involvement they want. Involvement is split into three levels

1.High involvement

This is the most active membership level. Level 1 members will receive information almost every month, including a regular newsletter, plus invitations to special events, groups, seminars and open days. Level 1 members will also be asked to take part in some surveys on a voluntary basis. Information sent will be tailored to your interests.

2.Medium involvement

Level 2 members will receive information frequently, approximately five or six times a year. Occasionally be asked to take part in surveys on a voluntary basis. This will include a regular newsletter and other information tailored to your interests.

3.Low involvement

Level 3 members will receive information about four times a year. All members will automatically become level 3 members unless they contact us to register as a Level 1 or Level 2 member.

You can change your membership level at any time by contacting the membership office.

What other information will I receive?

All members will receive information on elections and are eligible to vote (elections are normally held every three years).

Would I have to come into hospital frequently?

You can have as little or as much involvement as you like. We don’t need you to come in to our hospitals at any time, and you are not obliged to come to events. You can pass on views to us through your local governor, find out about our hospitals in the magazine and vote for governors via postal voting.

What are the public membership constituencies?

Our constituencies are split into Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, Tamworth or South Staffordshire, and Birmingham (Hall Green; Perry Barr; Erdington; Yardley; and Hodgehill) and the Rest of England and Wales.

Who are the governors?

Following elections in the summer of 2016, 19 public governors and five staff governors have been elected or re-elected to the Trust’s Council of Governors.

The public and staff governors have been elected by the Trust’s 26,000 members, consisting of patients, staff and members of the public. There were 54 nominations for the public and staff governor vacancies.

What do the governors do?

Governors are elected to the Council of Governors in order to reflect the interests of members within the constituency they represent, to influence decision making and to monitor the governance of the Trust in a trustee capacity.

Elected governor posts have up to a three-year term of office and can serve a maximum of three terms. Elections will take place at the end of the three year term or on an adhoc basis as governor seats become vacant.

Governors are not paid, although necessary expenses incurred as a result of the posts are reimbursed. Individuals cannot be governors if they are under 16 years of age, are a governor of another trust, are un-discharged bankrupts, or if they have, in the last five years, served a period of three months or more in prison.

How do I become a governor?

All members of the Trust are invited to nominate themselves or others for election. An individual who stands for election needs to specify the category of governor for which they wish to stand. Candidates are allowed to produce an election statement of no more than 150 words, stating their reasons for standing and detailing any relevant skills, knowledge and attributes.

If you apply to become a governor, you have to apply for the constituency you live in – as long as it is within the Trust catchment area. If it is outside the Trust catchment area you can apply to be a governor for the Rest of England and Wales Constituency
