What can I expect during my appointment?

Assessment

Physiotherapy assessment includes analysis of a patients history, lifestyle, symptoms and functional problems, along with the findings of the physical examination, and the results of investigations.

The physical examination comprises assessment of the patients muscles, joints, soft tissues and nervous system, and the resulting impact on function. The physiotherapist reaches a diagnosis through a process of clinical reasoning to produce an individualised plan for each patient.

When you attend your appointment please ensure that you wear appropriate clothing such as a strappy top or pair of shorts depending on the body part being assessed.

Treatment

The physiotherapist will discuss treatment options and the relative risks and benefits to agree on a treatment plan aimed at achieving specific goals. These goals, which are agreed jointly, are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timed. Treatment is aimed at achieving these goals and progress is monitored over a defined time period; this is supplemented by the use of recognised outcome measures.
